The Kingdom of Thrim Growing with God Series Book 1 edition by Janis Cox Children eBooks
Everyday, the townspeople of Thrim would ask, “Hey, Yoj, how are you today?”And everyday, Yoj would answer, “I am fabulous and full of life!”
And why shouldn’t he be? Yoj was the happy doll maker who awoke each day with a song on his lips and dinner invitations almost every night — until one day a mysterious stranger from the Shadowland arrived with promises of influence and wealth.
Without a thought or a prayer, Yoj followed the stranger to a gray land of small dreams and regret. Is his happy life in the Kingdom of Thrim forever lost? Is there hope of joy for the other residents of Shadowland?
Journey through The Kingdom of Thrim with author/illustrator Janis Cox where young readers will learn that you just can’t put a price tag on joy. When all the color goes out of Yoj’s world, he learns that the path to fulfillment and peace comes through using the unique gifts that God has given.
Opportunities for Family Discussion
The imaginary Kingdom of Thrim comes under the jurisdiction of the God of heaven, which opens the way for conversations about gifting and true happiness. Yoj’s predicament reminded me of the story of the Gibeonites with whom Joshua threw in his lot without first consulting with God through prayer. Reading this account as a family is a good follow up to the story. How are Joshua’s and Yoj’s situations similar? How are they different?
A number of good biographies have been written about the life of Eric Liddell, Olympic runner and disciple of Jesus Christ. He knew all about the joy that comes from doing what God had designed him to do, and is famous for having said, “God made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.” After having read both stories, help your children to reach a conclusion about what Yoj would have said, “God made me _____________, and when I __________________, I feel His pleasure.” Test their awareness of their own unique gifting by asking, “How would you fill in the blanks?” Be prepared to share your own answers as well!
It’s clear that Yoj and his friends from the Shadowland learned the glorious secret of Colossians 3:23,24:
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
The Kingdom of Thrim is the true home of all who put their whole heart and soul into doing what God has designed them to do.

The Kingdom of Thrim Growing with God Series Book 1 edition by Janis Cox Children eBooks Reviews
When we feel discontent, we often forget to seek God first. The same goes with children. Thus, I love books that help teach our children biblical truths like the Kingdom of Thrim.
In the Kingdom of Thrim, Yoj, a doll maker, receives an offer that will make him rich if he will only move to the city. He quickly says yes and makes the move only to realize the wrong he made in his haste. It is a story about contentment, seeking God first, and reaching out to others amidst life's challenges.
What Makes the Kingdom of Thrim Special?
*Beautiful Illustrations--As you may recall from my review of Janis Cox's Tadeo Turtle, Janis does a beautiful job illustrating her books with watercolor paintings.
*Pronunciation Guides--If a word may be difficult for a child to pronounce, a pronunciation guide is provided.
*Definitions--If a word may be hard for a child to understand, a definition is included.
*Hands-on Activities--Janis provides several reinforcement activities at the back of her books to help reinforce her stories. In the Kingdom of Thrim, my daughter decided to make the sock doll since she loves to sew. However, there are other options too, like making a kingdom out of building blocks or getting artistic with crayolas.
*Discussion Questions--Janis makes discussing the moral of the story easy with her discussion questions included at the back. "What do you think Yoj learned from his troubles?"
*Research Suggestions--This picture book isn't just for young children. It can also be a springboard for older elementary students who are learning to do research online. Links are provided to help them learn more about doll-making around the world as well as throughout history.
*Folktale Characteristics--Janis' stories come across as folk-like in that they are stories with a purpose, and because they are so intriguing. My girls are both evidence of this as they have been caught reading the book again to themselves several times.
Note I did receive this product for a blog review, but wanted to share here on too because I was so impressed with this book. Well done, Janis. We all loved it and will probably continue to read it many times to come.
Yoj lives in the Kingdom of Thrim. He is a doll maker. He gets an offer to help mass produce his dolls. The decision he makes leads him to other decisions he has to make. When you read this book to a child, you can point out how decisions Yoj made lead to consequences.
The book can also be used to teach entrepreneurship as Yoj uses his skills to make dolls. The book is beautifully illustrated. There is play with at least two words that I found. Some of the names are written backwards. This can teach children to look closer at words they are reading.
The book teaches that your decisions must be thought out, that you should consult God first, and that you can change your decisions if you want to in ways that can be helpful.
Janis' book is written in such a way that you could read it with different ages of children and use it to teach different things.
Note I received a review copy of the book from the author.
I absolutely loved “The Kingdom of Thrim”! It is a lovely story of gifting and purpose, as well as following the path that God has set before us. It beautifully guides the reader to seek the will of the One who has given them their gifts, for His plan will always bring us more joy that our own could ever bring. This book is lovingly painted and written to appeal not only to the young, but also the young at heart. Janis is truly a weaver of picture and story, and a teacher of life lessons. A great read for all ages!
